Growing up in Metropolis, my childhood home was on the same block with the Good Luck Glove Factory on Market Street. Several people in my neighborhood worked at the factory and was within walking distance to work. They treated their employees pretty good for those days and always had employees gifts on Holidays. Hams and Jellies just to name a couple. For every employee to get a gift was quite an achievment and very generous of the Luries.
ReplyDeleteThank you . Mr lurie was my father in law. I never had a chance to know him but my mother in law Florence was a great woman.
DeleteWhich Lurie was your father in law? My grandmother was a Lurie.
DeleteMy Father worked in the accounting department back in the seventies, may have been early seventies. He worked at the Carbondale Illinois Factory. It was a large operation, and they where very good to their employees. My Father loved working there as long as he did. Sadly, I remember him coming home one day telling us they where closing the company because the Chinese where putting them out of business. Mr. Dan Lurie was a very good employer.

DeleteMy mother worked at the Vienna plant and I always remember how exhausted she was at the end of the day but she was proud of the work she did.
ReplyDeleteMy Mother also worked in Vienna for the glove company in the late 60's early 70's. She liked it there!! She's passed on now several years.
DeleteI found a photo of the staff and employees of the Good Luck Glove Company in Carbondale Illinois from 1942 at a Carbondale estate sale.
